In a word, the reason that the most popular musicians are the least original is this: accessibility. For a band to become popular, especially if they aren’t promoted by a large record label, they have to appeal to a huge number of people. Although there exists a sizable contingent of music snobs who relentlessly seek originality and want to be challenged by the music they listen to, the major part of the population are mere hobbyists at best, interested in music that makes them feel good or that they can play in the background while they do and think about other things. When it comes to the question of success, then, bands have to ask themselves how to appeal to that mass of people. The answer is pretty clear: give them something they can understand.

For Example, The Beatles

Culturally speaking, understanding is a funny thing. At this point in musical history, almost everyone can listen to and on some level appreciate songs by, for example, the Beatles. Rare is the individual who does not like the Beatles at all. As one of the most popular and well-liked bands in history, it might be safe to guess that this band gave the public what it wanted, or what it could understand. In the beginning, this was probably true, but as the Beatles’ career progressed, they became progressively more experimental. There was a time when a vast segment of music listeners couldn’t quite understand what the Beatles were doing. And it has been argued that the Beatles were, to a large extent, borrowing original ideas from elsewhere and repackaging them to make them more acceptable for mass consumption. Slowly, over time, what was once new and puzzling has become exceedingly safe.

Safety in Numbers

In order to appeal to the masses now, rather than many years from now, safety is necessary. Bands need to write songs and play in styles that people already know how to listen to. When a song begins to play on the radio, the casual listener has certain expectations of the song: what instruments it will have, what it will be about, the structure of the song, the chord progressions that will be involved. Even if most people don’t know consciously that they have these expectations, they are there. If the song turns out to have no guitars, no chorus or discernible structure, and to have been written with an exotic modal chord progression, most listeners won’t like it because they don’t understand it. continue reading »

Gives a Reality Check
Certain movies play positive roles as well, and not all movies are bad. It however depends completely on the subject matter of the movie. Some movies try to create awareness about the socio-economic and political state of affairs of nations. It spreads awareness about the evils of drug abuse, alcoholism, HIV, and the evils of having many sexual partners. Movies create awareness about the importance of education, medicine, art and politics. It also brings us to understand more about the depravity of the homeless, and the plight of underdeveloped countries, and countries stigmatized by years of war. All these movie genres help awaken our sense of responsibly and empathy towards such situations. These socially enlightening movies help us realize the message which was being conveyed. It influences our thought process in a positive way and helps us try to do our bit in order to be of some help to humanity. While the number of people who actually do something is doubtful, there have been cases where people have taken up animal protection and human right activities after being moved by a movie they watched.

Induces Creativity
Movies help boost our imagination. We think about the things we saw and then we take our imagination a little further and visualize. This is one of the reasons why the animation industry is gaining more and more enthusiastic entrants, who wish to learn the tricks of the trade. Even young aspiring actors and movie makers are desirous of joining the movie industry, simply because they too will get to explore new horizons of their creativity and produce something new and awe inspiring.

Generates Employment
The movie industry has played a massive role in generating employment for people, the world over. Since there are so many people involved in making and producing a movie, it naturally has a wide scope for new job openings. More the people, the better. However, it requires specialized training and knowledge, in order to work for a movie.

Take Paternity Test

24 November 2011

The Biebs is in the news all the time, of course, but never so frequently as recently, since Mariah Yeater has claimed that Justin Bieber is the father of her 3-month-old child. The 20-year-old woman made her claims recently and it has set off a flurry of activity from Bieber, Yeater and attorneys for the respective parties. Of course, the entertainment media is covering the story 24/7.

Bieber is currently overseas but sources have noted that he is going to take a DNA test to prove false the claims of Yeater. Thereafter, it is expected that attorneys for Bieber will file suit against Yeater. Bieber himself has been in the news for other items of interest as well, having won Best Pop Performer and Best Male Performer awards at the MTV Europe Music Awards on Sunday night. On the “Today” show with Matt Lauer last Friday, he noted, “I’d just like to say basically that none of those allegations are true. I know I’m going to be a target, but I’m never going to be a victim.”

Indeed, it does seem unlikely that Bieber will ever be a victim, at least not while he has millions of dollars and tons of legal representation at his disposal. Bieber also took the time to explain why Yeater’s claims are ridiculous, saying, “I think it’s crazy because every night after the show, I’ve gone right from the stage right to my car. So it’s crazy that some people want to make up some false allegations, but to set the record straight, none of it is true. Never met the woman.”

Travel Channel

20 September 2011

The ghost hunter team of Ghost Adventures is made up of three men: Zak Bagans, Nick Groff, and Aaron Goodwin. Zak is the host of the show, with the most camera time. He is also the leader of the team. Zak is known for his extreme measures when it comes to ghost hunting. He is not afraid to yell at ghosts or provoke them into violence. These techniques have been doubted by some of his counterparts, but his antics do make good television. Nick is a co-host and co-investigator. He is usually behind the camera when the guys interview residents or owners of the various historical sites, but he does do a significant amount of the investigating. Aaron is the camera tech. He takes care of any technical issues that may arise during an investigation, and sets up the cameras in various locations to film while the team investigates. He also participates in the investigations.

The Premise

The basic idea behind Ghost Adventures is that the team is charged with finding ghosts in various, reportedly haunted locations. Their goal is not to get rid of the ghosts, but to prove that they are there. To do this, the team uses several different techniques. The first is talking and listening. The guys start talking and asking questions of the spirits that are present, and listen for any audible noises that might be caused by those spirits moving around. Sometimes, though, just listening isn’t enough, which brings on their second technique: scientific devices. During EVP (electronic voice phenomenon) sessions, the guys will usually have a recorder with them that records any voices not audible to the human ear. They also sometimes use very high-tech devices such as a thermal camera to record any changes in temperature the ghosts might cause, or what they call a “spirit box” that produces white noise, allowing the ghosts to channel that noise into words. All of this, plus what is seen on the cameras, works together to make up the proof that the audience needs to believe (or not believe) that ghosts exist.
